Lawmaker Tasks Leaders, Political Class On Violence-Free Elections
A member of the National
Assembly Dr Dawari George, has advised the political class and persons in leadership positions not to promote acts capable of causing violence during the general elections.
George (APC, Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru Federal Constituency), gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The lawmaker urged all well-meaning Nigerians to ensure violence-free election in February, saying that violence could only lead to regression.
“It is time for us the political elites and those of us who have found ourselves in leadership positions to know that we cannot continue to jeopardise and frustrate the future of our people by continuing to promote acts inimical to peace and security and stability of the area.
“Our area needs stability for development to thrive. And so, even as we plan to return, we’ll continue to preach this, we’ll continue to do everything within our power, we’ll continue to network with all stakeholders and those who have one role or the other to play to ensure that that culture of violence, that culture of lawlessness is put aside so that people can come together as one family to sit down and articulate a clear development agenda.“
George said that with dialogue and understanding, Nigeria could conduct peaceful and credible elections in February.
He said the recent commotion recorded in Rivers State was not good for the nation’s democracy
He said the crisis created fear in the minds of potential investors in the oil and gas industry as they saw the area as insecure.
According to him, a situation like that can lead to the loss of employment opportunities for the youth.
