Community Laments Exposure To Oil Spill
The Ibeno community, a settlement on the Atlantic shoreline in Akwa Ibom, has expressed concern over the health implication of last week’s oil spill in the area.
Their concern follows the non-commencement of clean up exercise in the area, one week after the spill.
Meanwhile, major oil firms operating in the area have denied responsibility for the spill.
Ibeno is host to Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) and the community had reported the crude deposit on the shoreline to the company. The Tide’s source however, gathered that the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) had commenced investigation to unravel the source of the crude oil and the company responsible for the pollution. NOSDRA reportedly ordered the management of Mobil Producing Nigeria, operator of the Qua Iboe oil fields, to clean up the spill while investigations into the incident continued.
When the source visited the spill site in Iwuopon in Ibeno Local Government Area on Saturday, crude deposits still littered the coastline, as clean up of the site was yet to commence.
Residents and fishermen at the site complained that the continued presence of the deposits was a threat to public health as it contaminated the waters and was toxic to aquatic life.
They appealed to the Akwa Ibom government and oil industry regulators to prevail on Mobil to clean up the site in the interest of public safety.
Mr Stephen Stephen, a resident, said: “At least, the oil company should clean up the place as its social responsibility to us; after all, it is within its operational area.”
The Public Afairs office in Mobil declined to comment on the directive as telephone calls and messages to public affairs officials at its Qua Iboe export terminal were unanswered.
