Marine Transporters Hail Wike Over Jetty Repairs
Some stakeholders of
Bonny/Nembe and Bille waterfronts along Creek Road in Port Harcourt have given Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State a pat on the back for his directive to commence immediate reconstruction of the jetties in the area.
The stakeholders who bared their minds in a telephone interview by The Tide on Wednesday said the reconstruction of the jetties was a welcome development and long over-due.
The patron of Nembe Jetty, Port Harcourt, Chief Maclean Aboh said with the promise by the action governor of Rivers State when executed completely, the project would alleviate the suffering of the people who use the jetties as the present condition of the place is pathetic.
Aboh, who is also the Director of Otis Marine Nig Ltd recalled that in 2007, the project was awarded by Governor Peter Odili but was abandoned by the contractor after mobilisation fee was paid, but expressed optimism that Governor Wike would march words with action to ensure that the jetties were completed for the conveyance of goods and services by ferries to the riverine communities.
In his own comment, the former chairman of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Bonny Unit, Hon. Israel Pepple, said it is a welcome development that when it is completed, the people of Bonny Kingdom would ever remain grateful to Governor Wike and appealed to him to try and keep to his promise, as well as the Bodo-Bonny road project.
Also speaking, another stakeholder, Henry Jumbo, who is the Beach Master, Bonny Marine Transport Association said, “I am very happy over the announcement as the project when completed will improve marine transportation in the area, as I also want the government to expedite action for the people to feel the impact of the present government in the state.”
The chairman, Nembe Waterfront of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Comrade David Teke described Governor Nyesom Wike as God-sent and commended him for the bold step taken to boost marine transportation in the area, praying God to continue to bless and guide him to always remember the riverine people in the scheme of things.
It would be recalled that Governor Wike over the weekend visited the Bonny, Bille and Nembe Jetties and promised an immediate take-off of reconstruction work at the Jetties as a means of boosting marine transport in the State.
