Table Water Producers Deny Calling Off Strike
Contrary to public im
pression that the strike embarked by the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) a week ago has been called off, the zonal chairman, Mr Gerard Kuru says it is still in progress.
The zonal chairman who disclosed this in an interview in his office recently said the action was taken due to the scarcity of raw materials used in the production of their goods.
Mr Gerard noted that the price of raw materials from last November to date had reached an alarming rate.
“A roll of the polythene sheet used for the packaging of sachet water popularly called pure water as at November last year was sold at N480 to N520, and N600 as at January, but now it’s being sold for N1200 per kilogramme,” he said.
“Before now a bag of sachet water was sold at N80 to the distributors, to resell at N100 but now a bag is being sold at N150 to distributors, to resell at N200” he added.
He lamented the poor supply of power within the state, adding that it had also contributed to the increase in the cost of production.
Speaking further he said the generators were used to ensure the production of their products, stressing that the scarcity of fuel in the country, had also affected the cost of production.
Some commuters who spoke with The Tide at Ikoku Junction complained bitterly about the current situation pointing out that sachet of water which was sold at N10 is now N20.
