Group Calls For Completion Of East-West Road
A youth group in the
Niger Delta which is known as Coalition of Niger Delta Youth Leader, has called for the early release of funds by the Federal Government for the completion of the East/West Road.
The group which said this at a press briefing in Port Harcourt also called for the commencement of work on the coastal road and railway projects.
The leader of the coalition, Comrade Emeni Ibe also called for the release of the over N800 billion owed the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
He stressed the need for gas processing companies and the ecological fund office to contribute to the NDDC Fund in line with the NDDC Act, while commending the Federal Government for the mature and steady implementation of the amnesty programme. The group also called on all ex-militants to be patient and co-operate with the government on the amnesty programme.
The coalition further called for its involvement in resolving the Niger Delta crises.
According to the group, “we demand our engagement in resolving the knotty issue of the Niger Delta as we believe that the effect of the extractive economies are the direct causes of violence in the region”, he said.
The group also urged for the implementation of the national conference report while the local content policy be amended to make provisions for vast communities and contractors and urged the Federal Government to dialogue with leaders of thought in the Niger Delta to end the spate of militancy in the region, adding that the militants should see the proposed dialogue as an opportunity to ensure a lasting peace in the Niger Delta.
“It is pertinent that we also bring to focus” need to reflect on the recent happening in and around our region.
“We therefore use this opportunity to call on all militant groups to desist from the atrocities they are carrying out against the Nigerian state in the name of Niger Delta” it said.
