NGO Solicits Support For Rural Women
A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the New Rivers State Oil and Gas Rural Women Coalition Forum (NRSOGRWCF) has called on multinational oil companies to empower rural women in oil-producing areas as part of their corporate social responsibility.
This should be done through the provision of non-refundable loan and skills acquisition training to enable them have the capacity to support their homes and the society at large.
President of the organisation, Her Royal Majesty, Eze (Princess) Adanma C. C. Onuoha, Ada-Eze-Kaegi 1 of Ogbaland, made the appeal in an acceptance speech shortly after her election in Port Harcourt last Thursday.
Eze Onuoha, who acknowledged the support given to women in Rivers State by Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration noted that considering the fact that government cannot do everything, it is necessary for oil companies to assist in the empowerment of women whose role is key in the society.
Stressing the need for women to have a sense of belonging, she regretted that women in the oil-producing areas were being marginalised in the state, pointing out that it was high time oil companies recognised women in their host communities.
“The time when women were given peanuts and seen as mere house-wives whose roles end in the kitchen is over”, she said, adding that the NRSOGRWCF would work with state government and politicians to ensure good governance.
According to her, the aims and objectives of the NGO are to bring rural women together, sensitise them on the importance of oil and gas as well as work with the government to develop women in different aspects of life.
She appealed to the state government to play its part by providing empowerment schemes for members of the NRSOGRWCF, pointing out that oil companies like Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Total E and P, Chevron and the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) among others which signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the organisation were not complying with the agreement as they were not carried along in their scheme of things.
Other elected officers of the organisation are Mrs Biobele Abbot, Vice President; Mrs Biekere Favoura, Secretary; Mrs Ubele Richards, Assistant Secretary; Mrs Elesemu Wokoma, Treasurere; Mrs Racheal Kelvin, Provost 1 and Provost ll, Mrs Salome Ewaro.
