Niger Delta Committee Report: MOSOP Flays Non-Implementation
The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), has decried what it describes as increase in oil revenue which has not reflected on the lives of oil bearing communities in the Niger Delta region.
While presenting a paper titled, “ Implementation of the Presidential Technical Committee Report on the Niger Delta, Myth or Reality? at the just concluded Port Harcourt international oil and gas conference and Exhibition 2011, Barrister Ledum Mitee acknowledged the fact that the implementation of the amnesty programme had reduced the hostilities in the region leading to over 100 per cent increase in oil production.
Mitee who was represented by Young Kigbara, MOSOP’s Programme Officer for Environment and Sustainable Development pointed out that what was worrisome was the fact that the increase has not translated into improved livelihood of facilities available to the oil bearing communities of the region.
The paper reads partly, “ As members of the technical committee stressed at a one-day meeting convened on November 5, 2010, to consider the implementation of the report, “ a selective and ad-hoc implementation of the recommendation undermines the sense in which the technical committee on the Niger Delta and indeed the region envisaged the pursuit of their peace, development, security and stability.
He said the recommendations by the presidential technical committee report had been implemented haphazardly as it is uncoordinated, adding that the local and state governments are not doing their own parts.
The MOSOP boss suggested that the state House of Assembly should harness efforts and pressure the caucus of the federal government to implement the report holistically.
