Don Hinges Basic Education Success On ICT
The Executive Secretary of National Educational Regulation Development Council (NERDC) Prof. Godswill Obioma, has said that the success of the basic education curriculum (BEC) would be hinged on Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Obioma, made the remark at the opening of a three-day workshop on the domestication of the nine-year basic education organised by the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Tuesday in Port Harcourt.
The NERDC scribe stated that the curriculum review is aimed at boosting the country’s socio-economic development through the acquisition of ICT skills for poverty reduction and employment of the citizens.
To this end, he stressed that the curriculum contracts have been restructured and re-aligned to meet both the present and future challenges.
The count down of the nine-year curriculum shows that ICT studies will now run through the classes, from basic 1(one) to upper Basic 3.
He noted that the scheme is targeted at providing the child with diverse basic knowledge and skills for entrepreneurship, wealth generation and educational advancement.
According to him, the child also stands a better position to develop manipulative skills that will enable him/her to function effectively in the society and to realise the required potentials.
He further explained that the inclusion of basic science, technology and computer studies at the primary school level, will open up a new avenue for self development and self actualisation through acquisition of process and communication skills.
Obioma stressed that it also provides the platform for achieving economic and social integration of the West Africa Legion through the economic community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) protocols.
Meanwhile, he had lauded Governor Chibuike Amaechi and the state government over its giant strides in educational infrastructure development, stressing that the policy would further drive the implementation of the UBE Programme.
