Diri Tasks Stakeholders On Justice Dispensation
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has charged all critical stakeholders in the chain of criminal justice system to play their statutory roles to ensure the speedy dispensation of justice in the State.
He gave the charge during the inauguration of the State Committee on Criminal Justice Monitoring at the State Judiciary Multi-Door Complex in Yenagoa, the State capital.
The Governor, who was represented at the occasion by his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrud Jakpor, emphasised the urgent need to do critical self examination on the criminal justice system.
According to the Bayelsa State Chief Executive, equity holds the key to a peaceful and crime-free society where no one is denied his or her rightful benefits and entitlements as law abiding citizens.
Diri noted that the lack of equity in the society over the years has led to the emergence of criminals and criminality in the country.
According to the Governor, the country is yet to fully attain its goals in the dispensation of justice because the justice system has been compromised, stressing that the Police, the correctional centres and the judiciary must play their constitutional roles to achieve effective delivery of justice.
The Governor, who made a case for mobile courts in the rural areas, suggested that magistrates should pay unscheduled visits to the Police stations in the various local government councils to examine thousands of detainees some of whom are illegally detained.
Also speaking at the event, Bayelsa State Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri, explained that the implementation of the administration of criminal justice law justified the inauguration of the committee in the State.
Abiri assured that the Judiciary as a critical institution in the administration of criminal justice sector, would continue to play its assigned roles to complement the State Implementation Committee, adding that it would speed up criminal trials in the courts by removing delays.
The Chief Judge is the Chairman of the State Administration of Criminal Justice Interim Monitoring Committee.
Others are to serve as Secretary, Assistant Secretary and members, which includes Commissioner for Justice, State Police Commissioner, State Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Services, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Chairman, Yenagoa Branch, Legal Aid Council, Civil Society group and Human Rights Commission.

Kalabari Media Forum Hails Recognition Of Dokubo Asari As Amayanabo
The Kalabari Media Forum has endorsed the recognition of Alabo, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo Asari as the Amayanabo of Torusarama Piri and the historical relevance of the award.
A communique issued after the 2024 end of year summit of the Forum also commends the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminialaye Joseph Fubara for the recognition which they described as the best end of year gift to the Kalabari people.
The Communique signed by the Coordinator of the Forum, Alabo Dagogo Clinton and the Secretary, Mr. Harry Awolayeofori Macmorrison states that the gesture should make the Kalabari people to get back to the drawing board and consolidate on existing inter and intra communal peace within the region.
According to the statement, Torusarama Piri was the first place where the founding fathers of Kalabari converged from different cultures, tribes and backgrounds. Adding that those saying that the Kalabari people are not united should think again.
” As the different founding fathers were able to form a formidable ethnic nationality, modern day Kalabari should be able to sink the differences between the constituent communities and with other non-Kalabari speaking neighbours to achieve the needed internal cohesion for development”. It states.
The Forum further congratulated Alabo Asari Dokubo on his recognition and urged him to use the opportunity to do even more for the Kalabari people and Rivers State as a whole.
According to the statement, the Forum is happy with the recognition of Dokubo Asari not because he is one of the patrons of the Forum, but because he is about the most Kalabari-centric figure living, who has also committed enormous resources for the protection of the Kalabari people.
They urged the Kalabari Se Kobiri and the entire people of the ethnic nationality to work with Alabo Dokubo Asari and put to rest speculations about Kalabari that some persons have exploited against the interest of the Kalabari people over the years.
