PDP Senatorial Candidate Lauds Etche On Culture Sustenance
The Rivers East Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Alwell Onyeso, has expressed satisfaction over the continued sustainance of Etche culture by the traditional institution led by Onye Ishi Etche, and Ochie of Echie land, Eze E.N.B Opurum.
Speaking during the 2022 grand finale of the Etche Wrestling Festival at Okehi, headquarters of Etche Local Government, last Friday, Chief Onyeso showered encomiums on the Etche traditional rulers for not allowing the people’s cultural heritage go extinct.
Chief Onyeso, who was the Chairman of the occasion, said the efforts of the traditional rulers in Etche deserve commendation for ensuring that the people’s cultural value as bequeathed by forebears remains alive
The former Sports Commissioner in the State noted that it required total focus, discipline and encouragement to ensure sustainance of culture, adding that the essence of culture in every community cannot be overemphasised.
He commended the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, for providing the enabling environment for peace and orderliness to thrive in the state.
Earlier, Vice Chairman of the Council, Hon. Gladys Nwaeke, described the 2022 grand finale of the Etche Wrestling Festival as remarkable, saying it has been a symbol of unity in Etche.
According to her, the event provides an opportunity for the youths to engage in meaningful activities rather than social vices.
In her remark, leader of the Etche Legislative Assembly, Hon. Cynthia Nwala, urged Etche youths to embrace their culture.
She encouraged the youths to engage in farming to earn a good living rather than wait on government for white colour jobs.
Highlights of the event included wrestling competition, cultural dance, showcasing of new yam and gift of prices to participants.
