RSG To Revive Ahoada Industrial Estate
The Rivers State Industrial Zone in Ahoada will soon be revived to beef up industrial activities and engender economic growth in the sub-urban centres of the state.
Governor Chibuike Amaechi gave the hint during a question and answer session at the fourth interactive forum with youths of the state yesterday in Port Harcourt.
The governor stated, ‘’ I have thought about it and I will take the proposal to the State Executive Council to deliberate on how to create a corridor for industrial development in that area ‘’.
He assured that once the plan gets the nod of the State Executive Council, then, the light industrial zone will witness a turn around, but observed that power and housing had to be provided to attract would-be investors in the area.
However, Amaechi while speaking on how the government plans to address youth unemployment in the state stressed that agriculture remains one surest way of providing jobs to teeming young graduates.
In his words,’’there are three or four farms we are trying to establish in the state. The reasons for establishing these farms is to create employment opportunities…If you create these farms, you will be able to employ those group of people that are not graduates, or have not been able to afford higher education to be employed in white collar jobs.’’
One of those farms the Governor explained include a massive 3,000 hectare agric village at Etche aimed at the youths and would cost the state about 440 million dollars in partnership with an Israeli firm.
He stated that the project was conceived to address the rising youth crime and was targeted at youths who were willing to engage in agric business’’, stressing that the farm would have 300 homes and each would have one hectare of land to farm and you would live there with your family, and there will be a health centre,a market, and a school inside there’’, and assured that once the plans were ready, it would be advertised for willing youths to apply.
Earlier in his address, Commissioner for Youths, Hon Owene Wonodi stated that the forum was geared at keeping the youths abreast with government policies and programmes and at the same time get their views on governance.
He recalled that in previous forum the Governor had promised to interface with youths in the state, the occasion had provided an opportunity to weigh government’s policies from the youth perspective
Hon.Wonodi congratulated the Governor on his birthday and lauded him for initiating the programme
Also speaking, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Comrade Bethel Oko-Jaja observed that by organising such forums continuously, the Governor had endeared himself to the youths and brought governance closer to the young generation.
While praising the Governor for his developmental strides, Comrade Oko-Jaja challenged him to ensure the sustainability of some of the projects while urging him to also evolve measures to address the rising youth unemployment.
Other highpoints of the forum presentation of awards to some youths who had made the state proud and special gift to the Governor on his 47th birthday.
