Sanitation Court Convicts 22 Offenders
The Rivers State Sanitation Court, has convicted 22 persons for various sanitation related offences. The convicted persons were arrested by the Rivers State Ministry of Environment’s Task Force during last weekend’s monthly environmental exercise.
The commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli who spoke to newsmen shortly after the exercise, said that the conviction was to serve as a lesson to those neglecting environmental exercise, as well as those who live in filthy environments.
The commissioner who was represented by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Sir. George Nwaeke also said that the ministry had introduced community sanitation exercise to create awareness on the need for environmental cleanliness in rural communities across the state.
He decried the conversion of drainages in Port Harcourt city and its environs into dumping ground, stressing that this ugly situation has led to flooding in most parts of the city.
The commissioner also said that the poor attitude of the people towards cleaning their surroundings had created breeding grounds for mosquitoes and lassa fever, stressing that the situation must stop immediately.
Also speaking the Director Environmental Health and Safety, Rivers State Ministry of Environment, Mr. Napoleon Ewhule explained that the community sanitation was to enable every households in the state to have a well constructed toilets thereby checking indiscriminate defecations on the rural communities.
Meanwhile, the Vicar of St. Military Church Port Harcourt, Rev. Isti fanus H. Butswat (JP) has charged residents of the state to co-perate with the government to keep the state clean.
Rev. Butswat said this during a thanksgiving service as part of activities to mark this year’s World Environment Day in Port Harcourt.
He said that the task of cleaning the state could not be left to government alone, noting that people must clean their surroundings regularly.
Also speaking, Sir George Nwaeke said that the service was to thank God for his mercies on staff of the ministry.
Sir Nwaeke also said that the situation was part of sensitisation process with a view to creating awareness on the need for a clean environment in the state.
