Condemnation Trail Assassination of Ex-Rivers Lawmaker
The death of a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Charles Nsiegbe following gunshots from an unknown gunman in Port Harcourt last Thursday night has continued to draw condemnation from Nigerians.
One of such is Dr Godswill Alaye who described the killing of the frontline politician of the Peoples Democratic Party as dastardly and puts a question mark on the security of the state.
Dr Alaye said that the situation was worrisome because the assailant of the deceased was said to be someone in police uniform who pretended to be on routine duty.
He described the situation as unfortunate, pointing out that the incident has instilled fear on the citizens who were made to believe that normalcy had returned to the state capital after the surrendering of arms by militants.
In his reaction, a politician, Mr Ago Tams said the recent incident has added a new dimension to criminality in Port Harcourt as armed men in uniform seem to be on the prowl.
Mr Tams said the police and other security agencies operating in the state now have greater opportunity to deal with the situation to avoid a recurrence and instill confidence in the people.
He noted that a situation where people now point accusing fingers on the police who are supposed to protect lives and property calls for thorough investigation, adding that the police should begin to look in ward and purge itself of bad eggs in the system.
Another policeman, Anthony Jumbo described the news of the death of the ex-lawmakers as saddening, noting that the state has had its fair share of criminality in recent times.
Mr Jumbo observed that cases of kidnapping cultists, murder and armed robbery have had its toll on people of the state, which have also led to the relocation of some multinationals from the state.
He stated that the murder of the politicians calls for serious concern both from the government and the law enforcement agents.
