Fire: Rotary Club Commiserates With RSNC
The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Central, of Rotary International District 9140, has commended The Tide Newspaper for its wide coverage of events of Rivers State Government, Rivers Communities and Nigeria as a whole.
The President of the Club, Rotarian Chief Okwun Omeaku, made the commendation when he led the club on a visit to The Tide in Port Harcourt.
Chief Omeaku noted that there are very few indigenous government-owned Newspapers in the country that are alive adding that The Tide has not broken off in the chain of daily productions.
He said the Rotary club is impressed with the quality of the newspaper promising that the club would want to identify with it.
Rtn Omeaku, reiterated that Rotary is a humanitarian organisation that is poised to help build a society of responsible citizens.
According to him, Rotary Club World-Wide works with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to eradicate Polio adding that it has invested over $650 million to eradicate the disease worldwide.
The Rotarian expressed the club’s sympathies over the fire incident that engulfed some parts of the Corporation’s building, stating that the Club was also on the visit to see the extent of damage and seek areas of collaboration to ensure that The Tide is on a good footing.
Responding on behalf of management and Staff of rivers State Newspaper Corporation, the general manager, Mr.. Celestine Ogolo, acknowledged that even after 41 years of existence in the business o newspapering and printing, The Tide seems to be one of the very few that are still standing in the country.
Ogolo said the visit was significant because the Club was the first by any group aside from the media to visit after the unfortunate incident of 20th July when part of the Corporation’s building was razed.
He described the visit as soul-lifting and special, and called for greater synergy between Rotary Clubs and the media since they basically serve humanity.
He stated that The Tide in a few months time would be taking delivery of a new Rotary machine, courtesy of the Rivers State government, adding that The Tide would be reaching a lot more people since 30,000 copies would be produced in 45 minutes and circulation would be wider especially in the South-South.
