NBA To Partner NASS In Lawmaking
The President of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Okey Wali has expressed the Bar’s preparedness to synergise with the legislative to ensure laws that impact on the people are enacted.
Barrister Wali in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said the Bar will provide professional expertise that will aid in the law-making process of the country to ensure the growth of democracy in Nigeria.
Wali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) noted that the NBA in the past only stopped at contributing to justice sector bills, pointing out that his tenure will go a step further, now that the association has been allocated an office at the National Assembly premises.
“We will give the lawmakers professional expertise that will help them in the law-making process. This is to ensure that good laws that will benefit the masses are made, as our contribution to the development of democracy”, he said.
He also said that the present executive of NBA has a serious task ahead in ensuring that the NBA secretariat is not tied to any political office as in other countries.
The NBA president said the association will also concentrate on human capacity development to ensure that the future of the profession is secured, in addition to tackling the issues of welfare of young lawyers.
He called for the co-operation of lawyers across the nation, stating that National Executive council meetings will henceforth be for two days to enable members concentrate on the serious business at hand.
On the issue of protest by some lawyers during the last conference, he said the problem was caused by some NEC members who failed to communicate the increase in conference fees to their members due to non-participation in NEC meeting.
He noted that all issues in dispute will be addressed during the NEC meeting, adding that non-NEC members will no longer have access to NEC meetings.
