World Bank: Nigeria Gets 14 Mining Equipment
As part of efforts to boost mining activities in Nigeria, the World Bank has assisted the country’s Ministry of Mines and Steel Development to purchase 14 vibrometors for the ministry.
Vibrometer is an instrument used to measure vibration as a result of different activities but for the ministry, it will be used to measure the vibration of earth movement caused by man-made activities such as mining.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Pius Major, who disclosed this during a workshop on the use of the instruments in Abuja, said it would be used in the quarry pending when the nation would embark on large-scale mining.
“For now, since we don’t have large-scale mining operations in Nigeria, it is mainly going to be applicable to quarry”, he said.
Represented by the Director of Mines Inspectorate, Abubakar Ibrahim, Major explained that the project management unit had insisted that the officers are trained to handle the equipment before releasing them for usage adding that the SMMRD commenced the capacity building workshop.
According to him, “the objective of the workshop is to train officers so that they can measure the effect of both natural and man-made earth movements in order to mitigate the effect on public buildings, infrastructure and utilities”.
