Bayelsa Govt Signs MoU On Capacity Dev
Bayelsa State is to partner with United States Government in promoting transparency and capacity development for officials in the state executive and legislative arms of government.
The first phase of the arrangement is expected to kick-start early next month and it would last one year.
This was part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Bayelsa State Government represented by due Process and e-governance Bureau last Thursday.
Under the agreement which Governor Timipre Sylva, on behalf of Bayelsa State Government and USA ambassador to Nigeria Robin Renee Sanders signed, USAID working through the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) will train key officials of Bayelsa State under the project target “Strengthening Transparency, Research, Independence and Development (STRIDE)”.
Speaking after signing the agreement, Ambassador Sanders described it as first of its kind between her government and any other state in Nigeria, and commended Chief Sylva for his zeal to impact positively on the life of his people in areas of transparency and fiscal responsibility.
She said the MoU was another demonstration of dedication to openness as the project would involve the use of Bayelsa State Government funds to increase capacity for governance.
In his remark, Chief Sylva remarked that development is a gradual process which has a starting point noting that his goal is to make the state a model in terms of building strong government governance.
He described the MoU as the beginning of what promises to be a great partnership.
However, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Dofie Ola, further clarified that the agreement has provisions for regular dialogue and establishes the range of policy issues that have relevance to the achievement of development goals in the state.
