Women Urged To Stand Against Negative Widowhood Practices
Women have been called upon to rise up to the challenge and fight against widowhood practices in the Nigerian Society for an enhanced psychological and emotional well-being of women across the nation.
The chairperson, Federation of International Female Lawyers (FIDA) Rivers State branch Barr. Otuoke Appolonia N. made the call Tuesday in Port Harcourt at the one-day workshop on “Breast and Cervical Cancer; And Widowhood practices, the Rights of Women,” organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) as part of its quarterly programme.
Barr. Otuoke who noted that widowhood practices are prevalent in the rural areas of the society said the practices are meted on the women due to their weak positions and status in the society adding that they inflict a high level of psychological and emotional pain on the women.
The FIDA chairperson enumerated the practices to include compelling the widow to proclaim her innocence of allegation of having caused her husband’s death, compelling the widow to drink water used to wash the deceased husband’s corpse, disinheriting the widow on the death of her husband, forcing and throwing the widow out of her matrimonial home.
Others include compelling the widow to re-marry an in-law, or vacate her matrimonial home on the ground that she has no child for her deceased husband, as well as forcing the widow to sit on broken coconut shells or any other harmful practices.
Barr. Otuoke maintained that these practices are not permitted under the law in Nigeria adding that they contravene the constitution and many other laws not only in the state but Nigeria and the world at large.
In her words “these practices are unconstitutional and offend the principles of fundamental rights of the widow, a person and a citizen of Nigeria; the laws strongly frown bitterly at these practices and those who indulge in perpetrating such practices are invariably rendering themselves to both criminal and civil liabilities.
