Repentant Militants Begin Lessons On Non-Violence
The training on non-violence and transformational programme for ex-militants under the Federal Government’s post amnesty programme has started at the Post Amnesty Camp in Obubra, Cross River.
Our correspondent, who visited the camp on Sunday reports that it opened on June 28, for repentant militants affected by the October 2009 Federal Government’s amnesty programme.
No fewer than 2,000 ex-militants participated in the first batch of the exercise meant for about 20,192 repentant militants in the nine oil-rich Niger Delta states of Nigeria.
The first batch of the trainees had earlier gone through biometric registration and documentation at the Obubra camp, prior to the commencement of training, which is expected to last for two weeks.
The training on non-violence and transformational programme, which formed part of the exercise, is being undertaken by a Lagos-based NGO, the Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria (FEHN).
Mr Allen Onyema, FEHN’s National Chairman, told newsmen at the camp that “the trainees had settled down for non-violence transformational training programme.
“They are eager to receive the training. The feeding problem has been corrected. They are being trained by FEHN. This aspect will last for five days.
“Other service providers like those doing identification management, counselling, drug abuse and so on, will do theirs accordingly. There are 10 classes of about 200 each,” he said.
According to him, the trainees will be issued with certificates at the end of the exercise while those who excelled will be selected to train others in subsequent exercises.
The programme, which is being done in batches of 2,000 per batch, is expected to end in six months from now.
