Cop, Others Arraigned Before Sanitation Court
A policeman and other offenders were on Saturday, arraigned before a sanitation court sitting in the Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority (RSESA) Head office, Rumueme, for contravening the state environmental laws during the clean-up exercise.
The policeman, who was arrested on the order of the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Environment, Rufus Godwins, along Psychiatric Hospital road, Rumuigbo, while illegally escorting a businessman conveying his goods in a 504 Peugeot Saloon Car during the sanitation exercise on Saturday, said he was assigned to the job by his boss at Omoku.
Briefing newsmen, the Permanent Secretary, who represented the Commissioner for Environment, Kingsley Chinda, lamented over the uncompromising attitude of uniformed men during the monthly sanitation exercises, noting that this action tends to sabotage the efforts of the state government towards the environmental cleanliness’ of the state.
He said, “This is one of the major challenges facing the ministry. We may not have the weapon of gun, the only potent power we have is the law. We have made several appeal to the Rivers State Police Commissioner in this regard and he has ordered that any of his men who disobeys the law should be brought to book”.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State University of Science and Technology Alumni Association led by its chairman, Hon Mrs Beatrice Awala, joined the Ministry of Environment to monitor the monthly environmental exercise starting from Old GRA to the Psychiatric Hospital road.
In her remarks, the RSUST Alumni chairman, Hon (Mrs) Beatrice Awala, lauded the vision of the Rivers State Government towards restoring the Garden City status of Port Harcourt. She assured that the association would partner, support and encourage the efforts of the state government towards improving the sanitary condition of the state.
