Five Choral Groups Qualify For NLNG Finals
Five Choral groups have qualified for the finals of the maiden edition of the Rivers State Choral Competition being sponsored by the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG).
The five groups are, Afiba Music Academy Choir, Brotherhood of the Cross and Star Rivers State Central Choir and Choral voices of Port Harcourt.
Also qualified for the finals of the competition are Trinity Cathedral Choir and St Paul’s Cathedral Choir Diobu.
Declaring the Semi-Finals open, the manager Community Relation and Development, Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Mr Andy Odey said that the company will continue to maintain its cordial relationship with the Rivers State Government.
Mr Odey who described music as an important aspect of African tradition said that the competition would provide opportunities for the various choral groups to showcase to the world their hidden talents.
He also commended the judges for their objective assessment of the various choral groups since the inception of the competition.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen, the manager Communication and Public Affairs NLNG, Mr Ifeanyi Mbanefo said that the competition was aimed at tapping the rich cultural heritage of the people of Rivers State.
Mr Mbanefo also said that it was the aim of the NLNG to promote career opportunities in music in the state through the competition.
In his speech, the chairman of the Panel of Judges, Professor Richard Okafor said the competition reminds him of the festival of the Arts in the former Eastern Region of Nigeria.
Prof. Okafor who described music as an integral part of the society, said that solidarity and friendship can be built if this important aspect of society is harnessed.
