RSG Raises Waste Management Committee
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a 15 member Waste Management Intervention Committee to ensure the cleanliness of Port Harcourt and its environs.
The commissioner for Environment Dr Nyema Weli who inaugurated the committee on behalf of the government said that the ceremony was to underscore the need for proper waste management in the city. Dr Weli explained that the committee which would be working mostly at night is to complement the efforts of the various contractors in the city.
The Commissioner said that the committee would be required to go into every neighbourhood in the city with a view to ensuring that wastes are removed.
Dr Weli who lamented the lack of equipment in the ministry, however assured that everything would be done to assist the committee in the discharge of its assignment.
Also speaking , the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment, Barrister Rufus Godwins urged members of the committee to see themselves as critical stakeholders in the cleanliness of the city.
He thanked the members for their willingness to serve the state and assured of the support of the ministry.
Speaking later with newsmen, the Chairman of the Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority, Mr Isoboye Jack said that Port Harcourt has been divided into six zones for effective coverage and evacuation of refuse.
Mr Jack said that the committee has become necessary as some of the refuse contractors have not lived up to exprectation.
Earlier the Chairman of the Committee, Mr Napoleon Ewhale said the committee would work hard to ensure that Port Harcourt returns to its garden city status.
Other members of the committee are: U.S. Nmegbu, Ephraim Etitinwo, Abel Jeremiah and Biteye Amachree.
Others are, Kadilo Kabari, Onenyiye Franklin, Alalibo Frederick and Faye Douglas.
The rest are Wobusi Ogbonda, Minabo Jack, Boyd Njiowhor, Clarence Weli George Okene and Francis Macaulay.
