NUJ Sympathises With RSNC Over Inferno
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has expressed sympathy with the Rivers State Government, management and staff of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, Publishers of The Tide Group of Newspapers over the inferno that occurred on Friday, the 20th of July, 2012 causing substantial damage to the newspaper office.
Congress in session, on Thursday, 26 July 2012 visited the burnt office to see things for itself and observed that water from the open roof on the second floor seeps to the first floor, causing pools of water in the offices on the floor including the newsroom.
Rising from the meeting, the union in a statement signed by the Chairman of the NUJ, Mr Opaka Dokubo and the Secretary, Mr Stanley Job Stanley described the unfortunate incident as devastating and capable of slowing down operations in the corporation.
The NUJ commended the prompt response of government through the visit of the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari and the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Emeka Nwogu to ascertain the level of destruction with a view to putting back the place in order.
The union, however, appealed to the Rivers State Government to expedite action in rehabilitating The Tide office, because the move will not only save the structure from incurring further damages due to the rains but would return the conductive environment once enjoyed by staffers for an enhanced performance.
