Presidency Intensifies Efforts To Achieve MDGs Target
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs), Dr. Precious Kalamba Gbeneol, has said that the Presidency is intensifying
efforts to ensure that the MGDs are actualised in all rural areas of the
country before 2015.
Gbeneol said this in Port Harcourt, last Thursday, during a
Town Hall meeting on ownership and projection of MDGs projects as part of her
senitisation and advocacy strategy.
She said the goals are time sound and inter-related, adding
that they also need urgent intervention.
According to her, the goals cannot be separated so as to
enable her office reduce poverty to its bearest minimum.
The Presidential aide noted that the MDGs was created by
several centuries that met in New York about 12 years ago with a task to ensure
that the girl-child is not short changed.
She further explained that the founding members of the
programme (MDGs) were also tasked among other issues to ensure that women’s
health are improved in order to reduce child/maternal moternity.
She argued that it is disheartening to her that a woman dies
during or after about six months of delivery.
The programme according to her, is mainly for rural
dwellers, adding that those living in slums must be given the adequate
attention.
The Tide gathered that the agency (MDGs), embarked on a
conditional cash transfer in order to provide funds for states to enable them
match it with the available cash in their coffers.
She also hinted that they intervene in a particular age
brackets in an attempt to eradicate extreme poverty.
Our reporters, reported that the MDG’s score card will be
ready in 2015, adding that most rural areas are yet to feel its impact.
Also speaking, the Special Assistant to Governor Amaechi on
MDGs, Mr. Desire Bobmanuel, said that the state is working seriously to ensure
that the MDGs are achieved in the state before 2015.
Bobmanuel, was of the view that the State Government has
done enough in the areas of health and education sector, while lauding the
Presidential aide for her visit.
The SSA also visited the speaker of Rivers State House of
Assembly Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Amachree and the Chairman of the Rivers State
Council of Traditional, King G.N.
Gininwa with a plea to carry out the message to the grassroot.
