High unemployment level has been identified as one of the key factors responsible for the low development of insurance sector in the country.
The Regional Manager, FBN Life, Mr Adisa Abiodun who made the observation in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt said if 90 per cent of Nigerian workforce were gainfully employed, they will be able to take insurance services and the sector will grow.
He called on the government to create employment opportunities for teaming unemployed Nigerians and to also create enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
Mr Abiodun urged Nigerians to change the attitude of placing insurance last on their table of needs and priority in view of the importance of insurance in the present society.
He noted that risk is around us always and everywhere with high possibility of losing property or life and expressed the need for the risk to be transferred to insurance pratitioners with little premium.
The insurance expert also want government to enforce laws guiding the sector to awaken peoples interest. According to him, “so many things are wrong in terms of enforcement, and with change of attitude the sector would experience rapid growth as is the case in other countries of the world.”
On motor insurance in particular, he remarked that it is being patronised because it is compulsory as police and other appropriate agencies would demand for it and that was why people take it seriously otherwise, it would also have received same low patronage as other types of insurance.
He frowned at government plan to take away motor insurance which is third party from insurance companies to Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC). “We learnt FRSC will be doing third party insurance which is wrong. It is only in Nigeria such a thing can happen. They should let insurance company to do insurance business,”’ he maintained.
In same manner, he opposed removal of workman insurance, which is also third party and wants all the bonds to come to insurance company remarking that government planned to take them away from insurance company.
