LG Commission Trains 1,150 Junior Staff
The Rivers State Local Government Service Commission says 1,150 junior staff have benefited from its training programmes.
The Chairman of the commission, Chief Azubuike Nmerukini (JP), said this during a two-day workshop organised by the Commission for Directors in the 23 local government areas in Port Harcourt.
Nmerukini noted that it was part of the function of the Commission to employ, promote, appoint, discipline, retire, transfer and train staff of the unified local government system.
According to him the Commission has embarked on series of training and retraining programmes such as the OND/BSc/MBA Programmes at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Seminars and workshops, adding that the Commission also organised a pre-retirement training for all staff due for retirement between January and June 2013. He also disclosed plans to conduct another training for those who are due for retirement between July and December 2013, adding that the workshop was expected to sensitise and equip the participants as managers at the third tier of government.
He stressed that the commission will no longer tolerate indolence among Directors and urge them to embark on management skill that would enhance their service delivery, capacity.
Also speaking, Prof. Fab O. Onah said that one of the major factors necessary for effective service delivery at the local government level respectively is determined by the management services adopted by the Chief Executive Officers of the local government.
Prof. Onah added that the focus of the local government is the public well-being pointing out that management failure is one of the problem facing the local government.
Also speaking Barrister Cyprian Chukwu described the workshop as a welcome development and adviced the directors to take the programme seriously for the benefit of the local government council and the commission.
A Commissioner in the LG Commission, Chief Jonah Tamuno (JP), said the aim of the workshop is to train and retrain, staff adding that the workshop will equip them to meet the challenges in the local Government system.
