Diobu Demands First Class Chieftaincy Stool
A socio-cultural movement in Port Harcourt, the Diobu Progressive Movement, has demanded for first class chieftaincy status for Diobu.
The leader of the movement, Prince William Chinwo told newsmen in Port Harcourt that Diobu deserved a first class chieftaincy stool in view of its historical antecedent in the founding of Port Harcourt.
Prince Chinwo contended that Diobu was an autonomous Kingdom before the advent of British rule in Nigeria, noting that this could be attested to the fact that Diobu was a signatory to the founding of Port Harcourt city in 1913.
He also argued that Diobu was not past of Rebisi Kingdom, noting that the people were not happy that they had been placed under Rebisi Kingdom.
According to him, the lost glory of Diobu can only be brought back through the creation of a first class chieftaincy stool.
Chinwo said that the movement had already concluded arrangement to take legal action to compell the state government to create a first class chieftaincy stool for the people of Diobu Kingdom.
“Diobu has no problem with what is happening in Rebisi as it pertains to their Kingship.” The issue of paramount ruler in Rebisi is a fiduciary arrangement as there was no king before now in Rebisi but there was a king in Diobu,” he said.
While commending Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for restoring peace in Diobu and other parts of Port Harcourt, he appealed to the Governor to accord Diobu the same recognition as in Rebisi as far as the chieftaincy stool was concerned.
He also pledged the unalloyed support of the people to the Governor and the state Government.
