JTF Renews Strategies Against Bunkering
The Commander of the
Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Atewe, says the task force has its renewed strategies aimed at reducing attacks on oil installations.
Atewe made the disclosure during an operational tour of JTF formations and units in Rivers, Tuesday.
He said the new strategies were in conformity with renewed military architecture put in place to confront current security challenges facing the nation.
According to him, “The current wave of security challenges facing the nation will soon phase out due to renewed commitment and strategy put in place by security agencies. Nations at various points in their history faced serious security challenges, but are able to overcome it due to collective commitment and contributions of every citizen.
“At the moment, there is strong political and military dedication to end the current insecurity situation facing the nation. I call on Nigerians, groups and corporate organisations to provide us with useful and timely information that will enable us surmount these security challenges,” he said.
Atewe said the JTF had made tremendous progress in curbing reoccurring attacks on the nation’s oil installations through arrest of oil thieves, pipeline vandals and sea pirates.
He said the task force intensified operations in the past six weeks which led to the arrest of 14 vessels carrying illegal crude and petroleum products in the waterways.
According to him, the vessels and crew members are currently facing investigations and will be prosecuted if found guilty sabotaging the nation’s economy.
The commander said the nation needed special courts to fast track the prosecution of individuals and groups committing economic crimes.
“Courts and other prosecuting agencies involved in the trial of criminals who committed economic crimes should fast track conviction due to the attendant dangers of slow prosecution,” he said.
