2015 Polls: Monarch Sues For Peace
The traditional ruler of
Akuku Kingdom, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Oba Lawani Daudu, has urged politicians to let peace reign as the nation prepares for the 2015 elections.
This is just as community leaders have also called for peace in the Mushin and Fadeyi areas of Lagos where at least three people were killed following a fracas between supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress.
Daudu also said party leaders should allow internal democracy to govern their choice of candidates to strengthen the nation’s fledgling democratic process.
Daudu spoke during an interview with our correspondent in Lagos, shortly after his installation as the Daudu II of Akuku Kingdom.
The monarch, who retired from the Nigeria Police Force in 2007, urged traditional leaders not to fold their arms in times of crisis.
He said, “As the elections are drawing nearer, I advise politicians to give peace a chance. We don’t have to fight and struggle for leadership; the party leaders in particular have to avoid partiality. They should allow democracy decide who becomes their flag bearers in the elections.”
Speaking on his enthronement, he said he tried to ignore the call to community service after he was nominated by his clan to succeed the former traditional leader who passed on in 2001.
He said he only decided to take up the responsibility upon his retirement from the police.
He said, “I believe with the experience I have gained from the police service, I will be able to provide excellent service for my people.
“I hope to use this platform to get employment opportunities for our jobless youths and bring progress and peace generally to the community.”
