NOSDRA Confirms Fresh Oil Spill In A’Ibom
The National Oil Spill
Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), has confirmed a fresh oil spill from Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) Unlimited, Qua Iboe Terminal, in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
The State Director of the Agency, Mr Enyi Udeogu, gave the confirmation on Wednesday in an interview with newsmen in Ibeno.
Eye witnesses said that the oil spill occurred at Mkpanak community close to Ibeno Beach on April 19.
Udeogu also confirmed that he was aware of the fresh oil spill which occurred at the ExxonMobil facility on Sunday.
He, however, said that the agency had not ascertained the barrels of oil that spilled into the community.
“The community has reported the oil spill to us last week but the agency has not investigated the barrels of oil spilled in the area.
“By the time we finish investigation, we will pass it to our headquarters for further investigation,’’ Udeogu said.
Reacting to the development, Mr Ogechukwu Udeagha, Manager, Media and Communication for the multi-national company, said ExxonMobil observed intermittent patches of an oil based substance along the shoreline of Ibeno beach.
“Internal investigations indicate that the NNPC/MPN JV facilities have been operating normally. We continue to work with the relevant authorities to investigate the possible source.
“An emergency response team was immediately dispatched by Joint Venture Operations to the shoreline and samples of the substance collected for fingerprint analysis to determine its source,’’ he said.
According to him, relevant community, government and regulatory agencies have been duly notified.
Udeagha restated Mobil’s continued commitment to maintain high safety, health and environmental standards in its operations.
