MWUN Wants Rehabilitation Of Rivers Marine Transport Corporation

Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Rivers State, Comrade Jonah Jumbo, has advocated for the rehabilitation of the moribund Rivers State Marine Transport Corporation at Marine Base, Port Harcourt.
Jumbo made the call last Monday, in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt on the way forward for the maritime sector.
According to him, facilities at the State’s Marine Corporation at Marine Base are being under utilized and allowed to rust and waste, while one of the premises has been taken over by the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority (TIMARIV) and other road transport touts as their parking space for impounded vehicles.
He said time had come for the present government under Governor Nyesom Wike to rehabilitate the sector to generate revenue, help provide employment opportunities for the teeming youths in the state as well as give marine transportation a boost.
The union boss noted that there were many potentials in the marine sector that are wasting away, especially seafarers who after their trainings and certification go into the streets in search of marine jobs.
According to him, with the rehabilitation of the marine transport sector, Marine operators would have a sense of belonging and enjoy the much needed dividends of democracy in the state, stressing that the premises as well as the fleet of boats and River craft including the marine mobile clinic boats, have been abandoned for years.
He said the State Ministry of Transport should without further delay rehabilitate the areas and put all the facilities into use as to assist the people of the riverine communities who as tax payers have been deprived of such government facilities.
He reiterated that government should invest more money into the sector to give the people of Rivers State and indeed the seafarers opportunities to earn a living as well as reduce crime rate and other criminal activities on the waterways.
