SSANU Urges Continuous Funding Of Staff Schools
The Senior Staff Associa
tion of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari not to approve moves by some university authorities to stop funding of staff schools.
SSANU Chairman, University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Mr Bikume Syder, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
The call is coming on the heels of a statement credited to Chairman of National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Chief Richard Egbule, who on Wednesday reiterated government’s resolve to stop funding of the schools.
Syder said moves by the Federal Ministry of Education and NSIWC to exclude the staff school teachers from the university payroll system would lead to teachers’ sack and hike in fees.
“This policy, which has far reaching implications, is going to affect jobs of the teachers concerned; education of the children, and jeopardise the central objectives of setting up the schools.
“These staff schools, which are very important-vital component of universities laboratories, are used as laboratories in training of students from Education Faculties, among other uses.
“So, if you cut off that line, you have adversely compromised the ability of the university from achieving its core mandates,” Syder said.
Syder said this development, which violated the SSANU/FG Agreement of 2009, would lead to sack of teachers as private operators of the schools might not retain them.
He said the directive negated the agreement which the union had with the Federal Government that capital and re-current cost of the staff schools would be borne by the government via the universities.
