Give Attention To People’s Welfare, Association Tells RSG
The Pillar of Associations,
Rivers State has advised Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike to give adequate attention to the immediate needs of Rivers people.
The President of the association, Comrade Emeka Onyekwum in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said that although the governor had started on a good note by embarking on projects, the welfare of the people should form his cardinal objective.
He charged the state chief executive to endeavour to clear the backlog of salary arrears owed the state’s civil servants and pensioners, saying that the non-payment of workers salaries had slowed down business and crippled the economy of the state since the past one year.
According to the association’s president, “regular payment of workers’ salaries would boost the economy of the state. It is when somebody is alive and strong that he can move on good roads and enjoy infrastructure”.
He noted that building of human capacity was primary, while roads and other infrastructure were secondary. He therefore stressed the need for the government to have listening ears to the yearnings of the people and tackle them without delay.
Comrade Onyekwum observed that the present harsh economic situation and rising inflation were hitting hard on the people and called for immediate cushionary measures that would alleviate poverty among the citizenry.
Commending the zero-pothole policy of the present administration in the state, he said that the provision of steady electricity supply, good roads, good drinking water, education and healthcare services would positively impact on People’s lives.
He urged the people and residents of the State to give their total support and cooperation to the government while shunning all acts of antagonism so that the state can move forward.
