Delta To Enforce Sanitation Laws
The Delta State Commis
sioner for Environment, Mr John Nani, said that, henceforth, the state’s sanitation laws would be strictly enforced.
Nani stated this in Asaba when private sector waste operators in the state led a protest to his office.
The PSP operators through their chairman, Mr Maxwell Egbe, had accused the state government of not assisting them in their task of waste disposal.
They alleged that there were no sensitisation, enforcement, as well as prompt payment of salaries.
The operators also said dump sites had not been put in place by the government.
In response, the commissioner said a task force had been put in place so that any house or residence that refused to pay its waste bill would face the full wrath of the law.
He criticised the waste disposal operators for resorting to a protest without first engaging in dialogue with him.
“ It will be unfair on your part to say that the government is not working hand in hand with you, knowing full well that it is untrue.
“Your money is in the bank, and it is because you have not obeyed the instructions previously given to you that you are yet to get your money.
“I am shocked that you refused to obey instructions only to take to the streets, saying you have not been paid,’’ Nani said.
He said that the PSP operators were authorised to keep an account with only the Zenith Bank or UBA.
The commissioner assured the protesting operators that those, who had money in their account, would be paid 70 per cent of their salaries by Tuesday.
He, however, added that those without money in their account should not expect anything.
Nani added that if the operators’ money had been paid into a wrong account, it could be traced if they had their tellers or documents to prove it.
He said the operators were fully aware that a dump site had been freely provided for them, adding that he was aware that some persons had been harassing the operators, preventing them from using the site.
The commissioner stressed that he had to pay the cost of the site with his own money to ensure that the place was opened for the operators to use.
