‘RSG ’ll Adopt People’s Approach In Conflicts Resolution’
The Rivers State Government says it will adopt a people’s approach in the resolution of conflicts in communities across the state.
Special Adviser to the Rivers State Governor on Conflict Resolution, Chief Okori Abelekum disclosed this in Port Harcourt at the Mediation and Community Reconciliation Workshop for Community Leaders in Gokana Local Government Area.
Chief Abelekum said that, the project will adopt an approach where the views of communities affected are reflected in the peace and reconciliation framework of the government.
The special adviser said that the recent peace initiatives of the Rivers State Government was a demonstration of Governor Nyesom Wike’s determination to bring lasting peace to Gokana Local Government Area and the entire state.
According to him, peace is achievable in Gokana, if the people are willing to contribute their quota towards the resolution of crisis in their various communities.
“I am happy that the participants have been carefully selected, to include local government chairmen, representatives of security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, women and youths.
“The goal of the workshop in addition to building local capacities for peace, is to enable conflict affected communities develop their community reconciliation plans”, he said.
Chief Abelekum also said that the committee was partnering with like-minded organisations to develop a conflict resolution and reconciliation plan that would reflect the views of affected communities.
Also speaking, Caretaker Committee Chairman of Gokana Local Government Area, Hon Louis Aluwa commended Chief Abelekum for his commitment to the realisation of government peace initiatives for Gokana Local Government.
Hon Aluwa also urged the people to carry the message of peace to their communities.
Speaking with newsmen, the Catholic Priest in charge of St Patrick Church, Bodo City, said that government peace efforts were now yielding results as cultists in Gokana are now surrendering their weapons and embracing peace.
