Eleme Council Restricts Motorcycle Operators
Eleme Local Government Council in Rivers State has banned the movement of motorcycles popularly called Okada, in Eleme communities from 5p.m to 6a.m.
The Caretaker Chairman of the council, Godwin Abebe Lolo announced this in a press release signed by the Council’s Press Secretary, Mr Nwanfor Orji Awala and made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt.
According to the statement, the restriction was part of measures to fight insecurity in the area.
The council in the statement noted that motorcycles are mostly used by crime perpetrators in the area.
He called on the motorcycle operators to comply with the new order pending when the ban would be lifted.
The chairman in the statement said, the ban of motorcycles was okayed after the security meeting with security agencies and relevant stakeholders on how to combat insecurity in the area.
He said any motorcycle operator caught violating the order would be charged as criminal and would be prosecuting accordingly.
The chairman said the council has given the security agencies the necessary support to checkmate the activities of motorcycle operators, especially within Eleme Township.
The council in the statement explained that the order was not aimed at undermining the movement of people and goods within the period but to ensure a crime-free environment in the areas.
He called on all relevant stakeholders to support the security agencies and the council to fight crimes in the area.
The chairman pledged continued commitment in fighting crime in the area, saying, that development only strives in an environment that is devoid of crime and illegal activities.
