Soldiers Feared Dead As Monarch Decries Attack
Gunmen have again killed about five soldiers in Omelema community, Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the State.
It was gathered the gunmen came from a nearby river, shot indiscriminately and went straight to a lodge where the soldiers were camped and opened fire, killing two on the spot between 11pm and 12 midnight on Sunday.
Sources in the area said, the security operatives were attached to an oil servicing company, but were lodged in Omelema Community before the onslaught by the gimmen.
The latest attack came barely 48 hours after gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra attacked some security checkpoints and killed eight security operatives.
The spokesman of the 6 Division, Nigeria Army Port Harcourt, Major Charles Ekeocha , has yet to comment on the incident as he had not answered calls put across to his mobile as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, security has tightened around boundary communities in the State.
Spokesman for the state Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said operatives had been deployed in different parts of the state, including the borders to forestall further attacks.
It was leant that heavy security presence was mounted at the Elele border with Imo State as well as the Oyigbo axis of the State.
Meanwhile, the Paramount Ruler of Omelema community in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the State, Chief Imeraani Mopho has condemned the killing of five soldiers by unknown gunmen in the area.
Chief Mopho, who made the condemnation in an interview with The Tide described the act as inhumane, and a threat to the existing peace in the area.
He narrated that they heard heavy gun shots during the attack on the Army personnel early hours of yesterday and theyalerted security agents.
The Paramount Ruler said the reason for the attack could not be ascertained and assured that the community would assist in providing intelligence to security agencies to fish out the perpetrators.
