120 Students Storm Badagry For Lagos Sports Summer Camp
Over 120 students have reported in Badagry for the Phase One, Season Two of the Lagos Sports Summer Camp.
Oluwatoyin Gafar, Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, told Newsmen on Wednesday that activities at the camp included 60 per cent sports and 40 percent life skills.
“The camp opened on Sunday August 15 and will end on Saturday August 21.
“There are about 120 participating students ranging from ages nine to 14, from both public and private schools in Lagos State.
“Participants at the camp are being exposed to Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Chess, Darts, Judo, Karate, Scrabble, Table Tennis and Volleyball,” he said.
“ For the Life Skills activities at the camp, all participants were divided according to their areas of interest,” Gafar added
“We have activities such as Artwork, Art and Craft, Tie and Dye, Makeup, Hairdressing, Hat Making as well as how to make a Power Bank and Power Bank Battery,” he said.
Tide sports Source gathered that some of the participants, on their second day experience at the camp, said that they were excited to be at the Lagos Sports Summer Camp.
The participants commended the organisers and also thanked Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the initiative.
An ecstatic female participant, Ayomide Akin- Idowu, 14-year-old student of Badagry Senior Grammar School camp, said that she was happy with the line of events at the camp.
“I am happy to be here and my area of interest is to learn the game of Scrabble and as well as to learn make-up.
“My first two days here now, because we came here on Sunday 15th August and today, it has been a lot of activities and I am very happy to be part of this experience.
“I want to thank the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for making this happen,” she said.
Fawole Adegoke, 12-year-old student of Grimos International College, Alagbado, also said that the camp activities had been fun, educating and impacting.
“My two days here so far have been a lot of fun, music, good food and conducive environment.
“So far, I am enjoying myself and hoping to go back home by learning new things that can be a life changer to me.

Ex – Super Eagles of Nigeria, Okwuchukwu Waobikeze has observed that sports development in Nigeria is going down.
According to him, grassroots sports is very important, without it, the administrators cannot get it right. So everybody should key into grassroots sports development, he said.
Waobikeze said this last Wednesday in an interview with sports journalists shortly after the Port Harcourt All Stars Independence football festival (OCTOBERFEST) at the Port Harcourt club, Rivers State.
He explained that for sports administrators to get it right, grassroots development is key. “They should be organising competition at the grassroots level to fish out the young ones for different sporting activities.
“Grassroots sports is very important so the administrators have to go back to the grassroots.
” Sports Development in Nigeria is going down we need to go back to the basics.
“Look at the just concluded Paris Olympics, Nigeria did not win any medal.
” Our football team did not even qualify for the Olympics. We are going down.
” If they should go back to the grassroots, they will get young ones in the games and talents will be developed.
” I started from school games, to youth games before playing for the national team. Now everybody wants to fly board to play professional football and a lot do not know the basics of the game.
” A lot of people did not know the little things about the game, they just want to play. It is not done so,” Waobikeze stated.
