Foundation Harps On Access To Justice
Chairman, Board of Trustees of O B Lulu Briggs Foundation, Dr. Seinye O B LuLu-Briggs says access to justice is vital for building inclusive societies in which the voices of vulnerable persons are heard and their rights to challenge discrimination and oppression are upheld.
Dr. Lulu-Briggs stated this at a free law clinic organised by the foundation in partnership with legal experts and organisations such as the Nigerian Bar Association, African Lawyers Association, Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA) OB. Lulu Briggs Foundation Law Grant Alumni Association and final year students of Rivers State University.
She regretted that a lot of persons were in silence on account of their lack of knowledge and misconception of the law and expressed the hope that the intervention would bridge existing gaps and ultimately lead to a better access to justice by all.
It would be recalled that the foundation, founded in 2001 by Dr Seinye O B Lulu-Briggs to institutionalise, honour and celebrate the legendary philanthropist, High Chief O B Lulu- Briggs was also to implement sustainable intervention and enhance the living conditions of the less privilege persons in the society.
The free law clinic was among the series of events lined up to mark the 20ih anniversary of the foundation.
A free eye clinic was earlier on held where hundreds of eye glasses and free eye treatment were given to indigent persons in the society.
Also speaking to newsmen, Co-ordinator of the free legal clinic, Barrister Nimi Walson Jack said the programme was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the foundation
He said the foundation had done so much for the legal profession in the state including paying school fees for law students from the state in law schools.
Walson- Jack said over 90 lawyers were involved and some final year law students of Rivers State University.
Some participants thanked the foundation for the gesture as according to them, it has opened their eyes to a lot of issues.
