‘Weak Control System Responsible For Fake Drugs Distribution’
Medical Personnel on Sunday blamed the sale, distribution and consumption of fake drugs in the country on weak and porous control systems.
Those who spoke with The Tide’s source said “chaotic’’ distribution networks is another reason sale of fake drugs had become seemingly permanent in Nigeria.
They noted that at every layer of drug distribution, the rules guiding production and distribution of drugs were never followed.
They advocated for closer monitoring and inspection of manufacturing processes and facilities, especially in offshore drug manufacturing companies, to ensure adherence to strict standards.
Chief Medical Director at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Prof. Ikpeme Ikpeme, also called for close monitoring and inspecting manufacturing plants located within the country.
“Quality assessment and assurance laboratories should be set up in- country to conduct sporadic checks on imported or locally-manufactured drugs.
“Regulatory agencies should also be strengthened while the use of special identification items like holograms and identification numbers which can be activated toll-free should be encouraged,’’ he stated.
Ikpeme also called for an intensive public health education on the dangers of fake drugs.
Similarly, Mr Abraham Idagu, a lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Calabar, stressed that the chaotic drug distribution system facilitated the circulation of fake, counterfeit, substandard, and adulterated drugs.
Idagu noted that ineffective enforcement of existing laws because of corruption also allowed the distribution of fake drugs to continue unabated.
“This system can permit expired drugs to be relabelled; even some drug products without any active pharmaceutical ingredients, to be sold,’’ he said.
He noted also that the Pharmacy Bill recently assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari would bring the much-needed transformation to the pharmaceutical sector and by extension, the healthcare sector.
“The bill provides the legal framework needed to tackle illegal drug importation and other associated drug challenges.
“It will also strengthen agencies saddled with drug regulation and the enforcement of pharmacy laws,’’ he said.
The lecturer called for a sustainable system that enabled nationwide tracking of drugs from source to final consumption.
“This will be of great importance in curbing the problem. The issue of drug manufacturing practices cannot be overemphasised.
“Policies and systems that ensure that drugs are consistently produced according to standards must be designed, maintained and followed, Idagu told the source.

Commissioner Hails RSHA Speaker Over Promise Of Constituency Projects To Ogu/Bolo
The Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi, has lauded the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, over his promise to attract constituency projects to Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.
The Speaker had during the commissioning of the Ogu/Bolo Legislative Assembly Complex executed by the Ogu/Bolo Council Chairman, Engr. Ishmael Oforibika, promised to attract constituency projects to Ogu/Bolo in the absence of the representative of the area in the Assembly.
It would be recalled that the lawmaker who represented Ogu/Bolo Constituency at the beginning of the 10th Assembly, Arnolds Davids, was among the 27 former lawmakers who lost their seats in the Assembly on the 11th of December, 2023, following their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Bipi, who is also the political leader of Ogu/Bolo, commended the Speaker for promising to fill the void created in the seat of Ogu/Bolo Constituency in the 10th Assembly by attracting constituency projects to the area.
He thanked the Speaker for promising to initiate measures, by embarking on needs assessment in Ogu/Bolo Constituency to know the needs and aspirations of the people and relay them to the Governor for action.
Bipi promised to work with the Speaker to actualise the move with a view to bridging the yawning gap of constituency projects in Ogu/Bolo.
He also dismissed insinuations by some persons on social media that Ogu/Bolo still has a representative in the 10th Assembly.
Bipi also reiterated his call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include Ogu/Bolo Constituency, along with the other 26 State Constituencies in Rivers State, in its upcoming bye-elections scheduled across the country. Emphasising that this “would guarantee full, equal, and effective representation for the people of the 27 State Constituencies at the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, ensuring that their voices are heard and their interests are protected”.
