Car Dealers Urge Govt To Reduce Importation Tariff
The Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria has called for a downward review of tariff to ease the importation of cars into the country.
Rivers State Chairman of the Association, Chief Edison Chukwukadibia, who said this during the Association’s End of Year and Award Night in Port Harcourt, said the cost of clearing imported vehicles in the country had made it difficult for the average Nigerian to afford a car.
According to him, government policies on the importation of cars into the country has not favoured the average Nigerian as only politicians can now afford to buy cars.
“The challenge is government policies. It affect this business so bad. They brought a policy that hinders the progress of the business”, he said.
The association’s boss particularly kicked against the ban on the importation of tokunbo cars, and the new tariff regime on the clearing of imported vehicles, saying that it has made cars to be beyond average Nigerians.
“The plan to stop the importation of tokunbo cars and the cost of bringing motors into the country is so high that an average Nigerian cannot afford to buy a car”, he said.
According to him, the way forward is to review the policies so that an average Nigerian can have his own car.
Speaking on the End of Year and Award program me, he said the revent was to ensure that members have a sense of fulfilment, stressing that with available resources, it will be an annual event.
Chukwukadibia, who is the National Public Relations Officer of the body, commended members for their continuous support.
Highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards to all states and some national officers of the association.
