Rivers Community Mourns Former Catechist
The people of Umuekwuruogor Orwu community in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State have been thrown into mourning following the demise of a popular former Catechist in the area, Pa Innocent Nwagugbulem Amaefule. Pa Amaefule died on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 after he was diagnosed of heart failure at the age of 81 years.
In a statement issued by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Amarachi Esther Peter-Amaefule, who incidentally is a member of Etche-American Foundation and author of ‘I Must Survive It’ and ‘The Country Bedbug’, Late Pa Amaefule was the eldest and head of Umuekwuruogor kindred and the third elder in Orwu Community. Late Pa Amaefule was also a community leader of high repute and was a man of the people, who was very vocal in speaking the truth and dispensing of justice whenever a civil matter was reported to the community.
He was a devout Christian of the Catholic faith and was ordained a Catechist in 1967 and became a Senior Catechist in 1985, a position he held until 2015 when he became old and could not perform those routine duties associated with the office of a Catechist.
Interestingly, Late Pa Innocent Nwagugbulem Amaefule preached the Word of God raw, as his mastery of the Word was as if he was among the writers of the Scriptures. He ensured that his Umuekwuruogor kindred worshipped God in Spirit and in Truth, while his family is known and acknowledged today as a Christian Home. The former Catechist used his prowess, mastery of the Word of God and religious inclination to win souls for God.
Late Pa Amaefule was a man of tripartite occupation during his life time; trading, farming and civil service; and used his resources to impact positively the lives of several persons within Orwu Community and its environs. He was peace personified and a lover of soccer, who played as a defensive midfielder and was nicknamed, ‘Ntuli’ (Nail), as no attacker would dare dribble pass him without sustaining an injury.
Pa Amaefule’s remains would be committed to mother earth on Friday, July 28, 2023 in his country home, Umuekwuruogor Orwu after a Requiem High Mass at St Vincent’s Catholic Church, Orwu Etche. Fondly called, ‘Inno De Catechist,’ Pa Amaefule would be remembered for his honesty and service to God and humanity.
