RSG Enlists Stakeholders’ Support For Health Insurance
Rivers State Government has enlisted the support of stakeholders ahead of plans to evolve an effective health insurance scheme for all citizens.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, made the appeal when she declared open a three-day workshop on Rivers State Contributory Health Protection programme in Port Harcourt.
Oreh said the administration of the State Governor, Sir. Siminalayi Fubara, is poised at ensuring that all citizens of the State have access to health care through a health insurance scheme that will cover both the rich and the poor.
She stated that since the scheme was passed into law by the State House of Assembly in 2020, efforts are being made to lay foundation for the programme through provision of both primary and secondary health facilities.
Oreh, who underscored the importance of an efficient health infrastructure for a comprehensive health insurance scheme, said what the Fubara’s administration wants to achieve is to drive the process through a public and private partnership.
She urged all stakeholders to support the process, as all necessary survey and data have been gathered to make the programme a success.
She stated that, “the schedule will provide opportunities for those who can not afford health through equity funding… And we do not want to leave anyone behind”.
Earlier, Acting Director of Health Insurance, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Vetty Agala, stated that over the years, the state has been putting the necessary facilities on ground for the smooth commencement of the scheme.
She noted the past administration of Chief Nyesom Wike in the state laid foundation by building and upgrading health facilities both at the primary and secondary health care levels, saying that these will help in driving an effective health insurance.
Dr. Agala said what was needed was synergy, collaboration and public sensitisation, as the workshop is geared towards schooling and mobilising stakeholders for the final implementation.
On his part, House Committee Chairman on Health, Hon. Adol Orubienimigha, expressed support for the scheme, noting that health provision is key for a stable and secure state.
Hon. Orubienimigha lauded the programme, and promised the readiness of the House to support the ministry in its programmes, especially through funding and passage of laws to make it one of the best in the country.
