Fubara Directs New Council To Recommence Employment Process At IAUE
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has directed the Governing Council of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) to recommence the employment process that was cancelled last year because of irregularities.
Governor Fubara gave the directive while inaugurating the newly reconstituted governing council of the institution at Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
The governor warned them against going against the initial approval of 869 staff only, with quotas specified for the academic and non-academic staff.
Governor Fubara said the emphasis is on engaging persons on merit, not on any other considerations.
This is because, he noted, competent persons as lecturers, when engaged, would offer the best grooming to students for the good of society.
He said: “I know the good people of Rivers State and the most energetic youths are waiting to hear something from me, and this is about the employment that was cancelled.
”Let me here and now approve the recommencement of employment of members of staff, both academic and non-academic, for Ignatius Ajuru University of Education with this pronouncement.
”That employment exercise must be strictly on the basis of the initial approval of 869 with a percentage for the academic and non- academic staff.
Governor Fubara further said: “In the higher institutions, what is needed is academic staff and not too much of non-academic staff.
“Therefore, Pro-Chancellor and members of council, make sure that the exercise is strictly based on the approval, and those to be employed must be on merit basis and not man-no-man.
”It is an institution, a citadel of learning where you are supposed to impart knowledge. If you bring down the standard, I assure you we are creating monsters that will destroy our society. Therefore, there shouldn’t be any compromise,” he warned.
Governor Fubara congratulated the members of the council for the noble appointment because it is a testimony that they served very well in previous appointments.
”Therefore, we are saddling you with more tasking responsibility, and we believe you are going to deliver.
”I have no doubt in the delivery ability and capability of Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka. I know that at the end of this exercise, we will all be happy. Let me on this note wish you well as you discharge this onerous responsibility in this most critical time of our dear State.”
In his response, the Pro-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka, expressed profound gratitude of members to the governor for finding them worthy of such noble assignment.
Chief Adokiye assured that members will work to ensure that the name of the university that speaks volume will be steered to become a citadel of excellence.
The Governing Council of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has Chief Adokiye Amiesemaka as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, with Dr. Iboh Okidim, Prof. Jason Osai, Prof. Ijeoma Akpu, Dr. Akabue Ugochukwu, Mrs. Mmeme Gogo-Adiari, and Hon. Dominic Sata, as members.

Rivers Chief Judge Grants Six Inmates Pardon
The Rivers State Chief judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi has granted pardon to six inmates standing awaiting trial at the Port Harcourt maximum correctional center.
The six lucky inmates granted pardon on Tuesday by the state Chief Judge included Nwekeala Chizoba, Samuel Emmanuel, Aniete Kelvin, Ebube Fubara and Goddey Okpara who were on awaiting trial as murder suspects and have all spent between 10 years to seven years in the custody without a proper information filed against them in the court.
Justice Amadi during a special gaol delivery exercise last Tuesday at the Port Harcourt Maximum Correctional Centre opined that the special gaol delivery was part of activities lined up to commomerate the 2024/2025 legal year in the State and restated the commitment of the state judiciary in decongesting the correctional centre and ensuring that those inmates who are not supposed to be there are removed from the custody.
The state chief judge stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together to build a society that supports rehabilitation and gives a second chance to anyone or group of people who have fallen short of the expectation of the law and have been punished accordingly.
He stressed that the National Judicial Council(NJC) encourages judges to pay more attention to criminal matters to enable them to decongests the correctional facilities, noting that since his assumption into office, his administration has been able to reduce the number of inmates in Nigerian Correctional Centres and the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre in particular, to less than 2,000 as against the over 4,000 inmates previously in the faculty.
According to him, “as they release the deserving inmates, they affirm their commitment to justice, compassion and rule of law but that they must not forget the fundamental principles of justice delivery system which is truth and fairness, integrity and equality before the law.”
I encourage you all the released inmates to return to your families and become better citizens. You must not engage in action that will return you all back to prison. Let me say that while the judges show empathy to you all, it does not absolved individuals from being held accountable for actions against individuals, corporate organisations and state which the law frowns at, ”he stated
The Chief Judge thereafter stood down the exercise to enable the DPP to intervene to case files following the fact that majority of the persons listed to benefit from the exercise are facing murder charges and adjourned to a date that will come before December.
Earlier in his goodwill message, the outgoing state Comptroller of Nigerian Correctional Centre, Port Harcourt, Felix Lawrence, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Controller General, commended the state judiciary led by Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi for their continuous effort aimed at ensuring justice and decongesting the facilities.
Other activities lined up for the event included special church service at St Paul’s Cathedral , Anglican Communion, Rebisi Port Harcourt, inspection of guard of honour by the state Chief Judge mounted by officers of the Nigerian police and a special court session held at the ceremonial court hall.
