Expert Raises Alarm Over High Level Of Deforestation In C’River
The Executive Director of We the People, an environmental advocacy group, Mr Ken Henshaw, has raised an alarm over the level of deforestation taking place in Cross River State.
Henshaw raised the alarm on Friday in Calabar at a round table discussion with the theme, “Fostering Strategies and Partnership for Forest Protection in Cross River”.
He said the current level of deforestation in the State could be described as “the fastest anywhere around the world.
Henshaw, who was quoting data from the Global Forest Watch Platform, described the situation as “alarming and disturbing”.
“Logging has taken an unbelievable dimension since the current administration in the state lifted ban on it.
“The administration merely set up a new forestry commission without addressing the key drivers of the illegal activity”, he said.
The Executive Director said the State Government introduced a scheme that permitted people to log identified trees and pay taxes to it.
“This means that the illegal activity has yet to be addressed. At the moment, the report we get from the field is even worse than that of 2023.
“The State Government should not see the forest as a resource that can only bring revenue through logging”, he said.
Henshaw said there were other non-timber revenue sources that could be legally explored and tapped from the forests, saying that the challenge of deforestation had taken a new twist as hundreds of young men had invaded the forests mining for solid minerals.
On his part, the Chairman, Cross River Forestry Commission, Mr George Oben-Etchi, said massive sensitisation was needed to educate rural communities on the dangers of deforestation.
Oben-Etchi said the commission was challenged by the issues of poor funding, dearth of manpower and outdated laws.
He notes that irrespective of the challenges, the commission would continue to do its best to tackle logging activities in the state.
A Calabar-based environmental expert, Mr Odigha Odigha, said residents of the state should rise up in defence of their environment by tackling the growing level of logging.
“It will be wrong to blame the government alone, the problem is our own, we should rise up to tackle it”, he said.
Odigha, a former Chairman, Cross River Forestry Commission, called for collaborative efforts to fight illegal logging activities in the forests.
“Before now, it used to rain in Calabar all year round, but gradually the rains are getting scarcer and giving way to intense heat”, he said.

Commissioner Hails RSHA Speaker Over Promise Of Constituency Projects To Ogu/Bolo
The Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi, has lauded the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, over his promise to attract constituency projects to Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.
The Speaker had during the commissioning of the Ogu/Bolo Legislative Assembly Complex executed by the Ogu/Bolo Council Chairman, Engr. Ishmael Oforibika, promised to attract constituency projects to Ogu/Bolo in the absence of the representative of the area in the Assembly.
It would be recalled that the lawmaker who represented Ogu/Bolo Constituency at the beginning of the 10th Assembly, Arnolds Davids, was among the 27 former lawmakers who lost their seats in the Assembly on the 11th of December, 2023, following their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Bipi, who is also the political leader of Ogu/Bolo, commended the Speaker for promising to fill the void created in the seat of Ogu/Bolo Constituency in the 10th Assembly by attracting constituency projects to the area.
He thanked the Speaker for promising to initiate measures, by embarking on needs assessment in Ogu/Bolo Constituency to know the needs and aspirations of the people and relay them to the Governor for action.
Bipi promised to work with the Speaker to actualise the move with a view to bridging the yawning gap of constituency projects in Ogu/Bolo.
He also dismissed insinuations by some persons on social media that Ogu/Bolo still has a representative in the 10th Assembly.
Bipi also reiterated his call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include Ogu/Bolo Constituency, along with the other 26 State Constituencies in Rivers State, in its upcoming bye-elections scheduled across the country. Emphasising that this “would guarantee full, equal, and effective representation for the people of the 27 State Constituencies at the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, ensuring that their voices are heard and their interests are protected”.
