Most public schools in Enugu resumed normal classes on Tuesday after the organised labour called off its six-day protest against the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Our correspondent reports that teachers and students turned out for school activities.

Schools visited included, Uwani Boys Secondary School, Urban Anglican Secondary School, Council Primary School at Obiagu and the Day Secondary School, Independence Layout.

The Vice-Principal in charge of Administration at the Day Secondary School,Mrs Ugonna Ani, was seen conducting the regular morning assembly for the students as early as 7 a.m.

Ani urged the students to pay attention to their studies because the term would be very short and also reminded them that they had lost one week to the strike.

Ateacher at the Council Primary School, Mrs Nnedimma Eze, called on parents to help their children at home academically to enable them to catch up quickly.

According to her, “we will do everything humanly possible to cover up as the strike has affected our syllabuses by one week.

“Conducting extra-mural classes will be our best option for students to cover up.”

In her remarks, a teacher at the Uwani Boys Secondary School, Mrs Ifeoma Obiejesi, said the Yuletide break was enough for students to forget a lot of things about their studies.

According to her, the teaching profession is not like office work because teachers put more effort in their work.

Miss Nkem Iloh, a student of the Day Secondary School, said she was happy that school had resumed after the Yuletide holidays and the extra one week occasioned by the workers’ strike.

Our correspondent reports that students dusted their classrooms and cleaned their school environments in preparation for the day’s academic activities.

Some of the teachers were also seen hugging each other and exchanging compliments after the New Year break and labour strike.
