\nFarmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Architect Kabiru Ibrahim, has said that good policies without adequate funding\u00a0 and effective implementation cannot improve the agriculture sector.
\nIbrahim, who spoke against the backdrop of the recently inaugurated\u00a0 policy working group for the Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) in Abuja,said in order to make agriculture an\u00a0 attractive business, a holistic approach must be adopted.
\nIt would be of recalled that the Minister of Agriculture and Rurual Development,\u00a0 Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, constituted a 15-member committee made up of 14 Professors and a doctor to fashion\u00a0 out policies that would effectively\u00a0 drive the country\u2019s agricultural\u00a0 transformation programme.
\nReacting to the setting up of the committee, the AFAN boss said it was a good initiative, adding that \u201cno amount of good policies without adequate\u00a0 funding\u00a0 and effective implementation of such policies\u00a0 can make the required\u00a0 change in the agricultural sector of the country.
\nAccording to him, agriculture\u00a0 must be capital intensive to\u00a0 make it an attractive business in the country.
\nHe said even the 10 per cent\u00a0 enshrined in the\u00a0 Maputo Declaration which Nigeria was yet to meet is not enough to activate the\u00a0 process.
\nHe advocated for the dedication of\u00a0 20\u00a0 per cent of the\u00a0 country\u2019s national budget to agriculture for proper impact to be\u00a0 made in the sector.
\nThe AFAN boss further urged\u00a0 government to go beyond making sound\u00a0 policies and ensure implementation of same to move sector forward.
\nOn the agricultural machinery and equipment\u00a0 hiring services programme launched\u00a0 in Abuja recently, Ibrahim,\u00a0 who is also a poultry farmer, advised the government to\u00a0 take the\u00a0 programme beyond\u00a0 the\u00a0 present level\u00a0 by making\u00a0 tractors and other relevant\u00a0 equipment readily available\u00a0 to farmers across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
